Description

The We Be Dey Sign is Sloopified Caribbean English for sure. But what exactly the artist intends to say remains a mystery.

Does he mean this as a version of, “We’re Over There” ?
Or rather as a way to say,”We are They”?
… As in, we’re all one, baby.

The enigma is ultimately what makes this sign a piece of art rather than just something pretty.  It creates a dynamic relationship between artist and audience. When the artist does not spell out the meaning of their work and the audience is required to interpret it for themselves, all parties participate actively, and there are no passive observers.

The We Be Dey sign is clearly re-purposed, as there is a small rectangle cut out of the center bottom, giving it a rather unique shape. On the left side of the cutout is a small palm tree beach scene, and on the right side of the cutout, the artist’s signature.

The colors used for the lettering of “We” and “Dey” are the same—bright yellow outlined with thick indigo strokes—indicating the same level of  importance in the sentiment.  The “Be” in white with a spring green outline adds a cool lushness to the sign.

Palms are the bit of only classic Sloop imagery included on the We Be Dey sign. They show up in a couple of different places. A friendly row of five palms sit a quarter of the way down the painting, and then the other previously mentioned palm beach scene in the bottom left of the painting.

The We Be Dey sign would be great for a place of business where people might need to follow signs to find you or certain areas of your property.
